Privacy policy
Small product, small footprint.
This policy covers the annotated. web app and the annotated. Chrome sidebar extension. The short version: we store what you publish, the minimum needed to sign you in, and nothing else. Last updated August 1, 2026.
What we collect when you sign in
Accounts are created through Google or X only — there are no passwords. From your provider we store the basics of your public profile: display name, avatar, and the provider's account id (used to recognize you next time). We never see your credentials, contacts, or anything beyond that profile.
What you create
Annotations, comments, likes, and follows are the product — they're stored on the server and are public by design. Media you clip (up to 90 seconds of video downscaled to 240p, audio segments, article passages, and any audio commentary you record) is processed and stored on the server so your annotation pages can play it. Every clip links back to its original source.
The Chrome extension
The extension keeps your sign-in token in chrome.storageon your own machine so you stay signed in. It reads the page you're on only when you clip from it (title, selection, player position) and sends that to the API when you publish. It does not track your browsing, inject ads, or collect history.
Fair-use claims
Anyone can file a claim on an annotation without an account. If you file one, we store what you submit — name, email, role, reason, and details — so the operator can review the dispute and follow up.
What we don't do
No ads, no selling or sharing of personal data, and no third-party analytics or tracking pixels. Data lives on the operator's server and is used only to run the product.
Deletion
You can delete any of your annotations in-product (from your profile or the extension's Profile tab), which also removes the stored media. For full account deletion or anything else, contact the operator and it will be handled promptly.
